Body Therapy

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a traditional Japanese therapy for relaxation, recovery and self-healing. Although shiatsu literally means 'finger pressure', the spirit of Shiatsu is one of communication through touch. It uses finger, palm, elbow, and knee pressure applied to the energy channels (meridians) of the body. According to the Japanese theory, balanced flow of energy through the meridians is necessary to maintain healthy body. Blocked energy in one of the energy channels can lead to an illness of the body or mind. Shiatsu was developed to release the energy blocks and improve blood circulation, flexibility, and posture. Shiatsu is an holistic treatment encompassing mind, body and spirit. It has the effect of calming the central nervous system and relaxing the muscles.

What to expect?

Shiatsu is done traditionally on a futon on the floor; we use a body cushion for support and comfort. Shiatsu is done fully clothed. It is important to wear loose clothes and to bring a clean pair of socks. During the treatment, pressure will be applied along the meridians or specific areas of the body. Stretches and breathing techniques will be incorporated as well. Different diagnostic tools are used to tailor a treatment specific to each client that is just right for his or her needs.
